Effective Poultry Waste Disposal

Due to recent changes in regulations for poultry waste disposal, many poultry farmers have questions about how to store and dispose of manure, carcasses and poultry litter. The regulations are slightly different for each, but Waste Spectrum have created this article to discuss some of the disposal options and how they are regulated.

What is Poultry Waste?

The phrase “poultry waste” covers a wide range of byproducts from poultry rearing, including bird carcasses, raw poultry manure, poultry litter and hatchery waste, including infertile eggs. Broiler chickens generate up to 2 tons of litter per 1000 every day, as well as 43kg of fresh manure per 1000kg of live weight.

Improper poultry waste management can have severe consequences. If not disposed of correctly, poultry waste can contaminate soil and watercourses with high levels of nitrates, uric acid and ammonia, among other compounds. These in turn could lead to the contamination of food and drink. It may also lead to the outbreak of diseases among other livestock and even the mutation of infectious animal diseases and new strains of viruses.

Poultry Waste Management Reasons

In March 2025, the UK High Court classified chicken manure as ‘waste’ under environmental legislation. The regulations on poultry waste management have tightened, with many welcoming the move because of the potential environmental harm caused by field piles, composting or burying raw manure, carcasses and litter.

Because of the high levels of nitrates, phosphorus, ammonia, uric acid and parasites, spreading raw poultry manure is considered unsafe. It presents serious environmental problems, such as odour, disease, waterway contamination and toxic algae blooms. Farms are now required to comply with Nitrate Vulnerable Zone (NVZ) regulations, Farming Rules for Water and Environmental Permitting Regulations in the storage, handling and transport of poultry waste.

Why Proper Poultry Disposal Matters

Biosecurity

If birds are dying from diseases such as avian flu, the carcasses must be disposed of securely to prevent the spread of disease. Improper disposal can even lead to greater numbers of mutations in viruses, which could cause species transfer in which animal diseases start to impact humans.
Poultry manure may contain antibiotics, which can kill microbes in soil and waterways.

Environmental Contamination

Untreated manure can leach toxic elements into the soil, causing nutrient imbalance and contamination that might be taken up by food crops. This can cause damage or stunt the growth of plants because of how concentrated the manure is with harsh nutrients.
If untreated poultry waste washes into waterways, it can lead to nutrient imbalances and eutrophication of waterways, in which bodies of water become too enriched with nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus. This essentially acts as fertiliser for algae and plants, which grow excessively, die and rot under the water. This process consumes the dissolved oxygen in the water, leading to suffocation for other aquatic creatures. It also leads to toxic algae blooms.

How Incineration Can Easily Manage Poultry Disposal

Effectively, poultry waste management is essential to prevent hazards that may not only affect your livestock and the local environment, but ultimately your business.

To ensure environmental safety and consumer health, businesses producing poultry products must make safe decisions about poultry waste disposal.
The government requires poultry farmers to follow stringent guidelines for poultry waste management. There are various methods for safely and securely disposing of poultry waste, such as sealed and secure on-site containment. These are often expensive and inaccessible for farmers and take time to install.

As collection fees and transportation prices continue to rise, compliance with guidelines necessitates a more cost-effective approach to managing poultry waste: incineration.

There are numerous benefits to choosing incineration over other forms of waste disposal, many of which have a direct and positive impact on the end user.

Ash derived from incinerating pure chicken manure is nutrient rich and easily pelletised. Many farmers use this as a relatively odourless fertiliser, as harmful contaminants will have burned away.

Incineration Compliance

To burn poultry manure in a combustion unit on your own land, the manure must be unprocessed and from your own land. You can’t collect from neighbouring farms or send your waste to someone else for incineration.

Other types of incineration

For incinerators that produce less than 5 megawatts (MW), landowners must apply for approval from the Animal Plant and Health Agency (APHA) by sending an application form filled in by the landowner and a combustion unit declaration form filled in by the manufacturer. For units that produce more than 5MW, you must contact the Environment Agency (in England and Wales, or the Scottish Environment Protection Agency in Scotland).

Rules about <5MW incinerators include:

• combustion unit placement on a well-drained hard standing, away from animals, feed and bedding
• required equipment for cleaning and disinfecting vehicles leaving the combustion area
• unit operation
• manure storage and how manure will be moved from storage to incineration, preventing cross-contamination
• mandatory record-keeping such as pest-control programme, cleaning and disinfecting protocol, and regular inspection records.

Choosing The Right Poultry Incinerator

For compliance, poultry waste incinerators must be equipped with automatic fuel management systems to transfer the waste into the combustion chamber, as well as auxiliary burners to maintain the temperature at 850°C.
Consider the size you need for your average waste management needs. Too big could be a waste of fuel, whereas too small could risk bottlenecks and waste build-up.
